A new kind of crazy

My second beta came in at 456. That makes for a doubling time of about 42 hours, so it appears we're headed down the right path. It also means we'll be left to fret away on our own for the next three weeks since there's no more scheduled monitoring until our 7-week ultrasound.

But I have a confession to make. Because our last IVF attempt ended in miscarriage, our nurse offered us additional monitoring if it would give us peace of mind. She said we could do more blood tests or schedule an earlier ultrasound. It was a kind offer, but J and I have decided not to take her up on it.

"What?!? Are you insane? An infertile woman refusing freely-offered monitoring? You give infertiles a bad name, you wench."

I know that's what you're thinking. Admit it. And, yes, maybe we are. But additional monitoring isn't going to change the outcome of this pregnancy, and it's unlikely to contribute any real peace of mind. What if we scheduled a 6-week ultrasound and there was no heartbeat? We'd agonize over whether development had stopped or whether it was simply too early. How would that make us feel any better? Yes, they could do measurements and make sure things were still on track, but I'm not sure that would be enough reassurance. Besides, we lost the last pregnancy sometime between weeks 6 and 7, so a 6-week (or earlier) ultrasound is unlikely to mean much.

Instead we'll hunker down for the 3ww. We'll do everything we can to ensure a happy ending: continue the PIO shots, eat healthy, stay hydrated, watch America's Next Top Model and Project Runway because the embryos like that. And we'll hope. We'll hope. It's all we can do.

Great news on the doubling. It's a hard choice and I am sure you know which one is right for you. No reason to do anything that is only going to cause you more stress or anxiety in this pregnancy. This will be a tough 3 week wait, I will keep you in my thoughts and check in on you regularly.

Great numbers! I know what you mean, when I got my last positive beta I just left it at that until the scan (which ended badly...) but like you, I realised that absolutely nothing I could do would change the outcome and figured just to leave it be....

Oh Sube - Amazing news, & youre so brave...resisting the monitoring....we went for it....but i do admire youre resolve. There was a study done in St Marys Hospital in London where they gave 'tlc' to their patients -offered them more monitoring, blood tests & u/sounds & apparently there was a statisitcial significant positive result that the women who were given this were better off....but youre right - the extra monitoring doesnt effect the outcome - im not trying to convince you at all just explaining where the rationale comes from....best of luck to you, I'll be checking in, im so happy for you x

Sube--I am so happy to hear the second beta went well. And I agree with you, more monitoring is not going to change the outcome. As you said, just try to stay healthy and stress free.

And yes, we are not finding out the sex of the baby...we never really wanted to, but when we hear people say what they are having, we get envious--so once in a while, I tend to change my mind--but only for a minute!

Also, I am so excited to hear that you love Project Runway!!! I love, love that show! I can't wait to see the finale.

Sube, I am so happy to hear about the beta and I definately understand about not wanting to moniter, although that was a super nice offer. It will either work or it won't and monitoring won't make it better. I wish you all the best for the next three weeks. Take care of yourself.

Gorgeous doubling--I'm so happy for you! And I understand not wanting to have the extra monitoring. We had ultrasounds at 5w, 6w, and 7w4d, and didn't see a heartbeat until the last one--so honestly, looking back, the first two didn't really add much.

Hope the next 3 weeks are as low-stress as humanly possible...

I am so happy for you Sube! I hope that your pregnancy continues on in an uneventful (happy!) manner. I agree that additional monitoring will not change the outcome, so it is simply your choice whether it will help you emotionally or not.

Looking forward to hearing your updates along the way...!

I think that makes a lot of sense. And how can Project Runway not help?

Awesome beta! Makes much more sense to wait for the definitive u/s than the could be iffy one. I did go for the extra beta though and it did give me peace of mind (until the next one of course)

Yay! I know how difficult the next 3 weeks will be but I like you're attitude. More tests sometimes just increase the anxiety.

Hooray!

I have to agree with your assessment on the early ultrasound offer. Nice of the nurse to be so thoughtful though.

Take care!!!

Sube!

I could swear I wrote a comment the other day when I read your wonderful news.
I am either 1) going crazy; 2)leaving comments on other people's blogs that say 'Sube, Yay!'; or 3) quite possibly both 1 and 2.

If my comment didn't make it up, I must say again CONGRATS on the good Beta news. I am thrilled for you and totally support your decision not to do the extra monitoring. Whatever makes you feel the most relaxed, given the stress you must be feeling already.

And the excitement -- YAY!

xoxo

Great second beta! I completely understand your reasoning for declining the additional monitoring. Despite the uncertainty of the next several weeks, I hope that you and J are able to savor in the knowledge that you are most definitely pregnant right now!

Congratulations. I'll keep checking back and I hope to see nothing but good news for the next 9 months or so! :) And I totally agree about Project Runway and America's Next Top Model being good for growing babies so keep it up!

Great news on the doubling, and you're right, I had a complete jolt of surprise when you said you were going to wait three weeks for any more news, but I also totally understand your explanation. I would say that if you start to feel tense, take her up on her offer. Studies have shown that the tlc approach has an effect in reducing recurrent miscarriage, so don't struggle alone if you get stressed.
